Published 06/19/2003

On June 26, the Internet2 consortium will present a Virtual Briefing "Operational Challenges of Campus Network Security," scheduled for 1:00-2:30 p.m. EDT (10:00-11:30 a.m. PDT).

Internet2 is a consortium being led by 202 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet. Internet2 is recreating the partnership among academia, industry and government that fostered today´s Internet in its infancy. The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) played an active role in the consortium's formation, and now routes much of its message traffic through Abilene, [http://abilene.internet2.edu/] the high-performance Internet2 backbone network.

The May Virtual Briefing had examined the future of network security; now the June Briefing will provide an operational perspective, including a presentation and update on the REN-ISAC, network security tools, and the challenges facing the campus security officer. The moderator for this discussion will be Gary Bachula of Internet2.

Speakers for the June Virtual Briefing include:

  • Mark Bruhn, Information Technology Policy Officer and Interim Director of the REN-ISAC, Indiana University, and member of the Internet2 Industry Strategy Council (ISC)
  • Kathy Kimball, Senior Director, Security Operations and Services, Penn State
  • Jeffrey Savoy, Information Security Officer, University of Wisconsin, Madison
  • Erik Mettala, Vice President, Network Associates Laboratories (an Internet2 Corporate member), who will describe the company's security tools and respond to issues raised by other panelists and Briefing participants.

Virtual Briefings are based on the Internet2 Commons service [http://commons.internet2.edu/], using the H.323 audio/video standard for interactive participation. For viewing only, the presenters stream in Real, Quicktime, Windows Media, IPTV/MPEG-1, and VBrick MPEG-2, with a one-way stream to the AccessGrid and VRVS communities as well.
